In northern and western Europe, early helmets were of leather reinforced with bronze or iron straps and usually took the form of conical or hemispherical skullcaps.

A gauntlet is a variety of glove, particularly one having been constructed of hardened leather or metal plates which protected the hand and wrist of a combatant in Europe between the early fourteenth century and the Early Modern period.

The lorica segmentata also called lorica lamminata, is a type of personal armour that was used by soldiers of the Roman Empire, consisting of metal strips fashioned into circular bands, fastened to internal leather straps.

Chain mail is a type of armour consisting of small metal rings linked together in a pattern to form a mesh. It was generally in common military use between the 3rd century BC and the 16th century AD in Europe, and longer in Asia and North Africa.

Cuirass, body armour that protects the torso of the wearer above the waist or hips. Originally it was a thick leather garment covering the body from neck to waist.

A bracer (or arm-guard) is a strap or sheath, commonly made of leather, stone or iron that covers the ventral (inside) surface of an archer's bow-holding arm.

Gorget patches were originally gorgets, pieces of armour worn to protect the throat. With the disuse of armour, gorgets were relegated to decorative use.
